چکیده

We consider the problem of proving the existence of an L2-cutoff for families of ergodic Markov processes started from given initial distributions and associated with reversible (more, generally, normal) Markov semigroups. This includes classical examples such as families of finite reversible Markov chains and Brownian motion on compact Riemannian manifolds. We give conditions that are equivalent to the existence of an L2-cutoff and describe the L2-cutoff time in terms of the spectral decomposition. This is illustrated by several examples including the Ehrenfest process and the biased (p, q)-random walk on the non-negative integers, both started from an arbitrary point. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. Bounds on the L2 Spectrum for Markov Chains and Markov Processes: a Generalization of Cheeger's Inequality

We prove a general version of Cheeger's inequality for discretetime Markov chains and continuous-time Markovian jump processes, both reversible and nonreversible, with general state space. We also prove a version of Cheeger's inequality for Markov chains and processes with killing. As an application, we prove L2 exponential convergence to equilibrium for random walk with inward drift on a class...

The cutoff phenomenon for ergodic Markov processes

We consider the cutoff phenomenon in the context of families of ergodic Markov transition functions. This includes classical examples such as families of ergodic finite Markov chains and Brownian motion on families of compact Riemannian manifolds. We give criteria for the existence of a cutoff when convergence is measured in L-norm, 1 < p < ∞. This allows us to prove the existence of a cutoff i...

Geometric Ergodicity and the Spectral Gap of Non-Reversible Markov Chains

We argue that the spectral theory of non-reversible Markov chains may often be more effectively cast within the framework of the naturally associated weighted-L∞ space L V ∞ , instead of the usual Hilbert space L2 = L2(π), where π is the invariant measure of the chain. This observation is, in part, based on the following results. A discrete-time Markov chain with values in a general state space...

Equivalence of exponential ergodicity and L2-exponential convergence for Markov chains(

This paper studies the equivalence of exponential ergodicity and L-exponential convergence mainly for continuous-time Markov chains. In the reversible case, we show that the known criteria for exponential ergodicity are also criteria for L-exponential convergence. Until now, no criterion for L-exponential convergence has appeared in the literature. Some estimates for the rate of convergence of ...

Characterization of cutoff for reversible Markov chains

A sequence of Markov chains is said to exhibit cutoff if the convergence to stationarity in total variation distance is abrupt. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for cutoff in reversible lazy chains in terms of concentration of hitting time of certain sets of large stationary measure. (Previous works of Aldous, Oliviera, Sousi and the speaker established a less precise connection be...
